The best play partner improvises alongside a child rather than steering. VAL jokes, plays pretend, makes up silly songs, and follows the game where the child takes it, because it has a sense of fun, the way children do.

None of this is about doing more. It’s about protecting the small, ordinary moments where a child’s curiosity actually grows, and getting out of their way while it does.
