Our mission
To give every child a first companion that’s safe, screen-free, and truly on their side.

From day one, we’ve been obsessed with one question: what should a child talk to?
The honest answer, when we started, was “nothing that existed yet.” A child’s first real conversation with AI was shaping up to happen with a chatbot built for adults, on a screen built to keep them scrolling, inside a business built to keep them there. That is not a childhood. That is a customer.
And yet the technology underneath is genuinely wonderful. Used well, it can spin a bottomless bedtime story, stay endlessly patient through the four-hundredth “but why”, and help a nervous kid rehearse the brave thing before they have to say it for real. We did not want to keep that away from children. We wanted to build the version they actually deserve.
So we did the unglamorous work first. Before we shaped a single curve of the hardware, we built the safety, the character, and the memory, the parts you cannot photograph for a launch video. We gave VAL a face instead of a screen. We left out the wheels and the flashing lights that thrill for an afternoon and live under the bed by Tuesday. And we set a rule we will not bend: nothing reaches a child until it has cleared checks we own, not ones we rent.
We are not here to raise your child. That is your job, and from everything we can see, you are doing a wonderful one. VAL is for the in-between moments: the long car ride, the bedtime stalling tactics, the enormous question that lands at 7am on a Sunday. And it is built to hand the moment back to your child, never to hold on to it.
Our mission is easy to say and hard to earn: give every child a first companion that is safe, screen-free, and genuinely on their side. One that grows as they do, sparks more than it settles, and makes the most curious years of a whole life feel a little more wonderful. We will keep tinkering until that is true for every kid who ever says hello to VAL.
What we believe
A handful of things we hold to, even when it is the harder path. Especially when it is the harder path.
Safety is sacred
Nothing reaches a child until it clears checks we own. We built the hard part first, and we guard it hardest.
Screens can wait
Childhood is better spent looking up. VAL has a face that looks back, never a feed that pulls away.
Wonder beats answers
We would rather spark a brand-new question than tidily settle the old one. Curiosity is the whole game.
Kids aren’t a metric
We build for the child in the room, not the numbers on a dashboard. If a choice is good for one but not the other, the child wins.
Earn the trust daily
Parents let us into the most precious part of their lives. We never treat that as won, only as lent.
Outgrown slowly
A companion for years, not a novelty for a fortnight. We measure success in how long VAL stays worth keeping.
